La Roux's single, Bulletproof, is a catchy and subsequently popular song.  However, does the song's quality measure up to its popularity?

Bulletproof is about a woman that has been in a relationship tht left her saddened and broken.  In the chorus, she vows again and again , that next time she will be strong, and that nothing like this will shake her again.  When he tries to renew their relationship, she refuses, knowing it would only have bad results.

Although Bulletproof is catchy, it has several problems.  One is the grading vocal techniques, and another is the overly-repeated chorus.  In fact, much of the song is spent saying, "this time, baby, I'll be bulletproof."  This issue definitely takes its toll on the song.  After the first thirty or forty second it becomes almost unbearable to continue listening.  Another problem is the poor recording work.  The song is recorded in a very badly executed, raw style.  At times Bulletproof sound like the work of an eight year old left alone in a recording studio.  In short, this is a song badly executed and under produced.  Clearly the result of a catchy chorus, Bulletproof's fame will be heretofore short-lived.

Space Bound -- Eminem

Most of Eminem's best songs have a slow beat and talk about more serious personal problems, and Space Bound is no exception.  A song from his 2010 album, Recovery, Space Bound discusses the difficulties of opening up to someone and the heartbreak of a breakup.

 In Space Bound, a man meets a woman, and as soon as he does, he wonders what a relationship with her would be like.  He has been hurt in relationships before but she has gained his trust.  He has been living alone for a long time, and he chose that life.  It has been an emotionless, cold, existance.  He loves her, and tells her not to toy with his emotions because he would not be able to handle it.  He will do whatever he must to be with her, but he is still worried that it will end, as his relationships always have before.  After 18 months, she breaks up with him, and he is crushed.  He begs her not to leave, but she will not listen.  He had let down his guard, and, once again, he has been hurt.  He tries to kill her, but cannont.  He tells her that he would have done anything for her, that he loved her, and asks her to think of him wheneer she sees the stars.  He then committs suicide.

Space Bound has a depressed sound created by an acoustic guitar combined with a slow and steady foreground beat.  This sound is complimented by other instruments which create a tear-drop-like sound.  THe chorus of the song is performed in a high-pitched futuristic tone which seperates itself from the other lyrics to describe the man's feeling for the woman.  The bridge of the song has a sound of difinity and finality which excellently completes the song.  Space Bound is a wonderfully performed and well-excecuted song seemingly destined for singleship.

In Spring this year One Republic released their single, All The Right Moves.  A song about inter-class relationship struggles, All The Right Moves peaked at 18 on the Billboar Hot 100, and has broken several North American music records.

All The Right Moves is about a poor man and a wealthy woman.  He does not have the right friends or the resources to get to her.  Her family has it better than he could imagine, and she has a chance in that life to make something of herself, but she wants to be with him.  They are trying to find a way to be together, and while they are making progress in their relationship he knows that her family will not let them get too far.  Her family has all of the connections, and he knows the two of them do not have a chance.  Everyone knows it too.  He asks her if she thinks that he is good enough for her, and what she thinks will happen.  They both know that the outlook is grim; He tells her that it can never work because they are so different, and everyone knows it.

The music sounds almost like the music of an old-time dance, which effectively portrays the image of people trying to make something work, and of trying to get around the issues being faced.  It has a strong beat, and the vocals are done in a style which makes the singer sound almost desperate, towards the end of the song moving into a confident sorrow.  The music excellently supports the lyrics, allowing the violins of the background to be overcome by the heavy sound of the drums and electrical instruments.  Almost like the sadness and desperation of the situation overshadowing all else.  At the end of the song, only the violins remain, as if to say that the battle was lost.  All The Right Moves is an excellently performed and moving song about the pressures of inter-class relationships.

Brick By Boring Brick -- Paramore

One of the shining stars of alternative music, Paramore boasts of one of the genre's best female vocalists, Haley Williams.  In their single, Brick By Boring Brick, Paramore tackles difficult issues of deeply-rooted pain and feal of release.

In Brick By Boring Brick, Haley is singing to a woman that has been hurt by people and the world.  The woman has built up a world where nobody can reach her to hurt her.  She has put reality out of here mind, and she cannot see the way things are because she is viewing them in the perspective of someone that has been hurt.  When someone challenges that view, she lashes out.  Haley wants her ti come back to the way things are, and to forget the fantasy world because it is just hurting her more.  Someone noticed her, and it seemed as though he was going to save her, but it did not work out.  The song talks about building your perspective and life carefully, or when things go wrong, it will fall apart.  When you pretend everything is wonderful and it is not, it is because you have been hurt somehow.  If it is not real, you cannot see it, feel it, or touch it.  If is is real and true, you still kow that it is when things fall apart.

Brick By Boring Brick is fast paced and heavily performed.  The base is used heavily, often one of the only instruments used with the vocals.  As with most of Paramore's other work, the guitars are played with great intensity, that shows great talent in the way that they sound as if they are run-together and, yet, seperate.  The drums are played in a rhythm which well supports the theme and style of the song.  The vocals are excellently used, applying differing styles to fit the lyrics.  The two key parts of the song come when Haley sings about why people build a wall around themselves, and when she sings about what is really real.  Brick By Boring Brick is an excellently performed song of instruction and encouragement.  A definite must-hear for everyone.

Your Love Is My Drug -- Ke$ha

Ke$ha: another addition to the long list of pop starlets which boast of names such as Britney, Katy, and Gaga.  In Ke$ha's Your Love Is My Drug, she once again attepts to both stand out from and blend in with her illustrious collegues.

The main plot point of the song can be found in the name: his love is her drug.  Ke$ha is obsessed with him and, it might be a lack of sleep or perhaps something more serious.  She sees him everywhere, even in her dreams.  She always hopes that he will be there.  She is like an addict for him.  She is like an addict for him.  He is special, and she thinks about him all the time.  People are telling her that she should give him up, but she cannot.  What she suffers from his absence washes away when he is there, and when he is gone, her world comes crashing down.  He is her drug.

The song is played in the style of a pop song from the late 90's or early 00's.  The only flaw being the final piece, where she states for the final time that his love is her drug, while laughing, and then randomly says that she likes his beard.  This final piece seems sloppily written, performed, and placed.  It is completely different from the quality of the rest of the song, begging the question, why?  The quality portions of the song however, are well-done, and provide an excellent addition to Ke$ha's previous single, Tik Tok.  The song has a heavy baseline, and the lyrics and sound make Your Love Is My Drug as addictive to the listener as Ke$ha's obsession is to her.

Uprising -- Muse

In 2009, the popular British band, Muse, made their American debut.  The first single in America, Uprising, has since appeared on MTV, television shows, commercials, and, of course, on the AT40.

Keeping in line with the song and album title, Uprising is about a resistance movement.  First and foremost is the idea that they will not be forced down or out by those in power.  In the end, they will win.  The ones in power are trying to keep the people in chains through lies and regulations; they are hiding the truth.  Paranoia is everywhere, and the government will begin again to lie and decieve soon.  They will try to keep us in submission, but we will not be controlled.  Free yourself from them, and let the revolution win you over.  Lose your fears, their reign of terror is at an end.  We must unify, and take power back.

Uprising was an excellent choice for a debut single in America.  Most people, especially Americans, fell as though they are constantly in resistance against one thing or another.  It is also excellently performed, with music that excellently supports the theme of the lyrics with both a futuristic and eighties feel.  The bass heavily influences the song in a thoroughly modern way, while the synthesizer and vocals are an incredible blend of the eighties and today.  The style of drums almost mimiks clapping, and the chanting combines to give additional lyrical reinforcement.  Uprising is an altogether complex and amazing song fit for and revolution or social event.

Nobody would think of calling Jay-Z unoriginal, and in his most recent song, Young Forever is no exception. Young Forever is a modern reinterpretation of the 1980's song, Forever Young, that although a cover, exudes the originality of a fresh perspective.

Young Forever is about wanting to be young forever and living life the way it should be lived. Jay-Z never wants to get old, but he also says that youth is not just physical, it is a state of mind. Our lives should be lived for every single moment, and the good times can last forever as we remember them. If we are young in our attitude and perspective, then we have lived our life well. With ambitions, we can succeed, and live forever, in our youth in the lives of others. He never gives up, and will live forever, one way or another. Life is too short to waste, and we should never be afraid.

Young Forever has used the chorus of its original, replacing other sections with similar, yet more chronically relevant lyrics. The song is wonderfully performed, opening as the original did, with the vocals similar to that of the original singer performed by Mr. Hudson. It then moves into the rap interpretation of Jay-Z. Rarely is a cover or reinterpretation better than the original, but Jay-Z has managed it. Using an entirely different genre than that in which it was originally performed, the Young Forever creates a new and better sound, while still allowing the beauty of the other to bleed through. Young Forever takes just enough of the old, and just the right amount of the new to form an incredible and inspirational reinterpretation that brings the message to a whole new generation.

Teenagers -- My Chemical Romance

Everyone knows something of My Chemical Romance, even if all they know of is the band's existence. One of the many masterpieces is the song teenagers, which beautifully describes the angst-ridden mind of the American teenager.

Teenagers talks about the pressure to conform. People are going to try and make you conform to their standards any way that they can. They will watch you to make sure that it happens. They will pervert any method for mental escape that you have, and destroy your dreams, thereby destroying your individuality. Teenagers although craving individuality and freedom, are no different. They are crazy, violent, and will judge you more than other groups will. The song also says not to lose heart, because if you feel oppressed, if you feel hurt, you can make them pay for it later.

Teenagers is an excellently performed song that combines clear and relevant lyrics a classic rock sound. The vocals are performed with the emo genre's hallmark whine while maintaining a hard and edgy feel. Teenagers opens with prominent vocals and an electric guitar, portraying the image and feeling of the vigilante so indicative of the teenage spirit. The song branches into a fuller arrangement for the chorus, returning to the original style only for the pre-choral sections. In 2006, My Chemical Romance created the song Teenagers, and in so doing, the "Smells Like Teen Spirit"* of the decade.
* Smells Like Teen Spirit was a song in the 1990's by the band, Nirvana.  It is often said to have been the teen anthem of the decade.

The Script is a musical trio hailing from Dublin, Ireland.  Their most recent single, Breakeven, is yet another example of the sad, and unexplicably inspirational, hit single of today.

Breakeven is a song about a man that has lost the love of his life to another.  In the song, he sings of how he feels as though he is barely alive, and how she was the best part of who he was.  He feels as though he is broken and bleeding because without her he is in pieces.  He prays to a God that he does not believe in because he is so desperate for the love that he has lost.  He believes that when they were together, their hearts were as one, and when she left him, their hearts were unevenly broken.

Breakeven has a very poppy sound, and at the same time manages an appropriately heavy sound for the lyrical content.  The high range used in the song seems to exclimate the pain and depth of feeling present in the song.  Drums are prominently displayed, and each note played by the guitar seems to strike a chord of the heart.  Breakeven is a beautiful song which excellently expresses the emotions of the lonely and brokenhreated soul.

Live Like We're Dyin' -- Kris Allen

After the American Idol finale, everyone was surprised.  Nobody had expected Kris Allen to win, his style was generic, and vocal ability tenuous when compared to the other contestant, Adam Lambert.  In Allen's first single, Live Like We're Dyin', Kris shows us that there is something to be said for conventionality.

In Live Like We're Dyin', Allen tells us that we do not do the small, but important things until it is too late.  We need to use our time wisely, and that if we do not stop to think about other, someday, when we need help, we will not be able to get it.  Allen also discusses how every day is a new chance, where we can begain again.  We never think about how some things are important until it is too late, and we need to live life while we may still participate.

Kris sings the song beautifully, speeding through parts of the choral arrangement while providing especially compelling vocals at the emotional climacterics of the song.  The music excellently complements the lyrics, and brings a constituent of authenticity to the inspirational, yet unoriginal message.  Live Like We're Dyin' is a motivating, and wonderfully radient song, and while it remains to be seens whether Kris can stay on top, he has surely gained many votes.

Tik Tok -- Ke$ha

Tik Tok is the first single, and superhit from Ke$ha's dubut album, Animal.  While other artists are writing hit songs about depression and struggling through issues, Tik Tok shows us that good times can sell too.
Tik Tok is primarily about partying.  In the song Ke$ha talks about how when she wakes up in the morning she feels fabulous, like Diddy,* She is going to party and have fun, and she is going to do it all night.  Guys are always calling her and her friends, but she has nothing to do with them unless the guys are rich and hot.  She is not going to stop partying until she sees the sun or until the police make her stop, and does not have any problems unless she has "plenty of beer."  She is popular, and confident, because the party is nothing until she arrives.
In Tik Tok, Ke$ha accomplishes a great feat for a pop/dance artist in having just enough in the music without going overboard.  At the beginning of the song, only a synthesizer plays, after which the beat follows continuously.  During the bridge, the music slows, allowing Ke$ha to speak about how the music breaks and builds her.  Afterwards, the synthesizer briefly abandons the beat and vocals, providing an additionally youthful and fun moment.  With music so catchy and lyrics so period relevant, it is easy to see why Tik Tok is such a big hit.

Lady Antebellum is a country music group already boasting of three Country Music Association Awards, one Acadamy of Country Music Award, and one Grammy.  In their most recent single, Need You Now, Lady Antebellum shows us exactly how they plan on adding to their trophy collection.

Need You Now is about a man and a woman that had been in a relationship, but have broken up.  In the first part of the song, the woman, played by Hillary Scott, is singing about how the memories of their relationship are crystal clear like scattered photographs on the floor.  She is alone, and misses him greatly.  She talks about how she thinks of him all of the time, and wonders if he thinks of her as well.  In the Final section of the song, the man, played by Charles Kelley, is singing of how he thinks of her all of the time, and of how he needs her.  He has lost all of his control, and he cannot make it without her.

The music suits the lyrics well, and adds to the emotional element of the song.  Bass, acoustic, and electric guitars consume the instrumental foreground while a staccato-like piano opens the song and provides a transitional constituent between sections.  Need You Now is a well-performed and excellently executed song, and with female vocals reminiscent of Taylor Swift, how can you go wrong.

Owl City with Seattle, Fall Out Boy with Chicago, and now Jay-Z with New York City.  With the help of Alicia Keys, Jay-Z's recent award-winning song, Empire State of Mind, celebrates the beauty and inspiring light of the city that never sleeps.

In Empire State of Mind, Jay-Z is talking about his history and love for New York City.  He used to be poor, but has made money, and even though he has moved away, he still loves New York.  Every kind and color of person lives in New York, and that is where life-changing events and amazing things have happened.  Jay-Z also talks about how people sometimes change when they come to New York.  He says that you should not lose sight of who you are because the city will change you for the worse if you let it.  In the chorus, Alicia sings about how dreams are made in New York, and that there is nothing you cannot do there.  She sings of how everything about the city is inspiring, even the lights, and that everything, and anything can be better in New York.

Typical of rap, the sound of the song is very simple. Jay-Z and Alicia's vocals, a piano, and a drumbeat.  Towards the end of the song a few stringed instruments make a subtle appearance in support of the piano.  The sound suits the songs well, allowing the lyrics to shine through and make an impact on the listener.  The stark contrast between Jay-Z's rap and Alicia's soaring vocals only intensify this effect.  Empire State of Mind displays both the glamour and the dark sides of New York City in a thought-provoking, and beautiful way.

Rob Thomas is well-known as the lead singer of top rock group, Matchbox 20.  However, he is also well-known for his critically acclaimed on-again off-again solo career.  Far from the nature of Thomas' last single, Diamonds, Someday is a wonderfully positive song about hope in the midst of adversity.
In Someday, Thomas is speaking to someone about the sadness in their life, and how they could live that way, or find a way to overcome their problems.  The main there of the song however, is more general and positive, speaking about the hope that can be found in the future.  Thomas talks about how when your life is better you can change the lives of others as well.  He also says that sometimes people don't realize how good it is possible for things to be, and that we should try and make it happen.
The lyrics aren't the song's only positive element.  Both the music and vocals have been performed in such a way as to fill one with a feeling of hope and positivity.  The piano is performed with an intricacy that blends with the simple pattern of the bass to create a powerful melody, beautiful to both the human ear and soul.  Thomas also employs the use of a choir, and orchestrates the final part of the song to sound as if the whole world is cathcing on to his message.  Someday is a beautiful song , seemingly capable of parting the dark clouds on the saddest of days.

One Less Lonely Girl is the newest hit single from pop music's latest wonderboy, Justin Bieber.  He has the talent, but will that be enough for him to make his mark on music history?

In One Less Lonely Girl, Justin is singing to a young girl that he loves, talling her that he knows how she's been hurt before.  He says that he's not going to let that happen to her anymore, and that she is going to be one less lonely girl.

At the young age of fifteen, Justin Bieber has shown his obvious talent and courage at having entered the music industry at such a young age.  The major problem with this song, as with his career in general, is that he has the voice of a twelve-year-old. When paired with lyrics that talk about love and commitment, his voice becomes an insurmountable distraction.  Not only are the lyrics a problem, but the style of music also deeply contrasts to the sound of the vocals. One must also consider Bieber's audience.  Typically girls like artists that are at least four of five years older than they are.  This means that Justin is singing about love and committment to nine or ten year old girls, and how he is not going to hurt them like all of the othr men in their lives. Exactly how many men have these girls been dating? Justin clearly has the talent, but is sadly lacking in the voacl maturity required for a lasting, let alone iconic, carrer in the music industry.

Rihanna's Disturbia was an excellently performed, albeit dark, song about the mental anguish of a bad relationship.  Her newest release, Russian Roulette, takes it all to a whole new level.

On the surface the song sounds as if it is about a man and a woman playing a game of Russian Roulette.  However, when one looks closer, a deeper meaning may be found.  Russian Roulette is used as a metephore for relationships.  Rihanna speaks of how afraid she is to enter into a new relationship because of how she has been hurt, but knows that she must be strong in the midst of her fear, and just "pull the trigger."

The dark theme and sound of Russian Roulette suits Rihanna well, giving a deeper beauty to her voice.  The music excellently compliments the lyrics, seeming to say in melody and rhythm what Rihanna is imparting in words.  In Russian Roulette, Rihanna draws from her life experiences to create a realistic and powerfull message.

*On February 8, 2009, Rihanna's scheduled performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards was cancelled.  Reports later surfaced regarding an alleged altercation with then-boyfriend, singer Chris Brown, who was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats.

Paparazzi is a song about a crazily obsessed fan of a rock star. In the song, the fans talks about how they she knows that he is the only one for her, and that she will chase after him until they are together. As with Lady Gaga's previous work, Paparazzi is the epitome of pop, filled with catchy lyrics and plenty of sizzle. The song is well-performed, and while it would sound overworked for other artists, the style seems to suit her well. Paparazzi is a cool and catchy song that leaves us all going gaga for Gaga.

Bigcitydreams -- Nevershoutnever!

In 2008, Nevershoutnever released the Yippee EP, featuring the song, Bigcitydreams. This is a wonderful ballad, filled with a sweetness and simplicity that emanates from the song.

Bigcitydreams is about a young woman living in a small town. In the song, her boyfriend, played by Christofer Drew*, talks about her dreams of leaving for the big city. He tells her that she should stop complaining and go follow her dreams, and that she should not let everyone think that she wants to stay. It ends with him telling her that they will all miss her when she leaves.

Bigcitydreams is performed simply, employing the use of vocals, piano, drums, and both acoustic and bass guitar; each in moderation. Having such a classic theme for a ballad requires a unique sound, something which Nevershoutnever! certainly does not lack. While not the most masterful or iconic ballad, Nevershoutnever! does accomplish a sweet song with a wonderful and unique feel.

East Jesus Nowhere -- Green Day

21st Century Breakdown is the most recent album released by punk rock band Green Day. One of the many incredible songs on the album is East Jesus Nowhere. So why hasn't it been released as a single?

East Jesus Nowhere is one of the most controversial songs Green Day has released in the past five years. The song has a clear and simple theme: the hypocrisy of religion, specifically looking at Christianity. In the song, Armstrong strikes a particularly controversial note when he sings, "a fire burns today, of blasphemy and genocide. The sirens of decay, will infiltrate the faith fanatics."

Lyrics aside, the song is impeccably performed, with an incredible style and music to match. East Jesus Nowhere is one of the album's best songs, but with lyrics so controversial, it is unlikely to be heard on the radio anytime soon.

Fireflies is the newest single from Owl City's 3rd CD, Ocean Eyes. This fun and poppy ballad is an excellent example of the brilliant work in Owl City's previous albums.

Fireflies is a beautifully imaginative song, filled with a childlike wonder virtually unseen in the music industry today. It is wll performed, overflowing with nonsensically sweet lyrics and transendental melodies.

As in many of his other songs, Adam Young's* voice resounds with a purity that seems to belong in the dremworld of his songs. Adam's best moments come during the slower parts of the song when he sings, "I'd like to make myself believe, that planet earth turns slowly." Having already reached nine on the Bilboard Hot 100**, it is clear that great things may be expected from this young electro-pop star.
